Throughout U.S. history, theological arguments have been used to deprive women of their full personhood and reproductive autonomy. This has been and continues to be an overwhelming reality in the lives of African Americans. From rape and forced pregnancy during slavery to forced sterilization to restricted access to reproductive health care to ignored high rates of pregnancy-related deaths, American institutions make it clear that the bodies of black women continue to be regarded as property and their offspring as products.

Deirdre Cooper Owens, an award-winning historian and popular public speaker, is the Charles and Linda Wilson Professor in the History of Medicine and Director of the Humanities in Medicine Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In this position, Dr. Cooper Owens is one of two Black women in the U.S. running a medical humanities program. Dr. Cooper Owens is also the Director of the Program in African American History at the Library Company of Philadelphia, the country's oldest cultural institution. She earned her Ph.D. in history at UCLA and has had a fellowship at the University of Virginia, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She has been "acclaimed experts in U.S. history," by Time Magazine.
Dr. Monique Moultrie lives into her calling through a career that spans the academy and the black church. Her scholarly interests include sexual ethics, African American religions, and gender and sexuality studies. Her book Passionate and Pious: Religious Media and Black Women’s Sexuality was published by Duke University Press, and she is currently working on a book on black lesbian religious leaders and ethical leadership.
Rev. Brandee Jasmine Mimitzraiem was ordained an itinerant elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 2003. She holds master’s degrees in Divinity, Theological Studies from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and Philosophy. She is currently working towards completing a PhD program in theology and philosophy at Drew University, Caspersen School of Graduate Studies. She served as assistant and associate pastor in AME congregations in Chicago, Denver, and Orange, New Jersey. She is currently appointed to serve as Pastor to the members of The Mighty Quinn Chapel AME Church in Lincoln, NE.
